1.Evaluation Question 1 'In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?'

3.Evaluation Question 3 'What kind of media insitution might distribute your media product and why?'

Here is a link to my purposed publisher
http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/

2. Evaluation Question 2 'How does your media product represent particular social groups?'

I orinally used these in my Secondary research taken from UKtribes, youtube video i decided these where my target audience and this look was what my social goups look like and want.

Above are some images from the my photoshoot for the front cover and double page spread. I made my model where clothes that where aporiate to my social groups i had decided to represent, Indie scensters, grungers and Rockers, I mixed the fashion, the leather jacket, guitar, skinnies and red doc martins to show a postitive fun light over the three different types of social groups. When I first did my research I said that i would mix emo into the magazine, I decided that dealing with the previously mention three it would be difficult to feature that into, I did how ever use dark colours which are a representation of emos.

4&5 . Evaluation Question 4 'Who would be the audience for your media product?' & Evaluation Question 5 'How did you attract/address your audience?'

Evaluation 4 part 1

As I have said in question 2 my social group wold be grungers/ indie scenesters/ rockers and a bit emo. The age group would 16-24. They would attend school/college and Universty age groups. As they will all be students they will not have a lot of money to spend but will be intrested in the music. The gender will most likly be mixed but as i have stated that this is a Girls special, females are most likly to buy this magazine the most. Above are images of some people who would by my magazine.

Print Prelim Task

Action Plan

Rough Cuts

When looking at my front cover when i thought it was finished i decided after some audience feedback that the right hand side was too blank and need more sell line or word and Special Issue as this is a special Issue. After the talking some people i decided that i needed more images and but more background behind the text. and stretch the red line at the bottom across and add special issue website address and tv channel.
I decided that my double page spread was okay but i decided that the top line with her name on should be stretched across and the logo moved down the image to the left next to the text should be at a angle and smaller and the title Girls in Rock world should be further across and bigger.

Construction of work

Screen shots of Double Page Spread in development
This was after I added 3 more images, my logo I had previously drawn (intial sketches) which I edited and change the colour on Photoshop CS4

This was after i added the article 'text' i learned wo to seperate the text into columns and wrapp text around. I also filled the text box with a black background and changed the writting to white to complement my colour scheme, which i stated in my mood board.

I added the main image by drawing a box and going file place. The image was slightly smaller than the box i had made so i left clicked and went to fitting, and clicked fit content to frame.
This is the begining stage of my double page spread i set it up in indesign and type in the number of pages i wanted.

Screen Shots of Contents page in Devlopment
This is towards the end of my contents page development i have but text into the text box .
I have placed my main background image on, this is off my main article as it is a special issue and is girl orinated. I have drawn boxes for text and pictures and where the front cover will go.

This is the start of the contents (above)

Screen Shots of Development of Front Cover
This is my front cover in its final stages. I have yet added the daate issue number and 2/3 sell lines. I have used effects for the main image to show more colour to the page.

This was the original photo i am using i had place it onto the page and sent it back so the witten was infront but i did notice you couldnt see the written on the black jacket.

I started with a blank page and i added my master head, sell line, barcode, prices and other things. I didnt have my image at this point.

Article for double page spread

Final Version
Girls in ‘Rock World’

The rock industry is very much a mans world, with the likes of AC/DC and the Rolling Stones all having male lead singers. Yet women are starting to rise in the industry, with the likes of Hayley Williams from Paramore and this brand new artist Katelynn Silverstone.

Katelynn started her self named band in 2004, to mixed reviews, yet 6 years later the band is one of the biggest rock bands in the country. The band who have had 5 number one albums around the world and record selling world tours, are now mixing things up with a documentary about there life inside the music and out side.

Katelynn also has a new album out, which has tipped to be the biggest selling album yet. Katelynn Silverstone came in to the studio a few days ago as she heard about this article and wanted to put a image to the text. She also commented how she thinks she is doing so well in a prodomatly Male world ‘its not about being male and female is what people told me when I was starting out, but I personally think it is, rock throughout history has been male, it was hard to get into the industry, and you would think that once you are in it would be easy yet it isn’t I think personally it gets harder to stay and get better’. We carried on chatting about a number of issues about the rock industry and women and she stayed adimit that she as no regrets ‘I will never give up what I have gained in my passion, it was my dream to be a rock goddess and I am reaching it, I have no regrets in my choice I have been asked if it would have been easier to get into a different angle in the music industry like pop, I say Hell No rock is all I was and am about from since I can remember my dad was in a rock band before he passed and I wanted to be a success for him and really my upcoming album is about him and his trials and fails I have dedicated it to him in his memory’.

The documentary about Katelynn follows her around for 2 weeks it see’s her recording the new album ‘Roger’ and her ending her tour with her last album ‘Hell on road’. Katelynn commented on her documentary saying ‘I want people to see the real me how hard I work but me personally out side the music, in the documentary you see things what I wouldn’t normally want anyone to see. I also wanted to make this to help other girls/women who want to get into the Rock industry’.

Anyone who inspires to be in the rock industry cannot be afraid to put themselves out there Katelynn proves this. With her 6th album due on 1st May and the documentary on E! on 24 march.
‘Never be afraid to get into the industry, reach out work hard and ignore anyone who tries to put you down women can do anything they want you just have to believe’.

Photo Skills Development

Here are a range of different camera distances which I took to develop my photographing skills
I also used these to what type of postion for example posing to the camera and also the natural photo where the subject in the image doesnt know the photo is being taken these all help me consider which will be the best to take for the magazine. Overall different shots can be assential, I am at this point thinking that natural photos and some posed photos cam be good. I know i want to use close up on face, medium shots, medium long shots and mabe a long shot.

Article Planning

Article Planning
This is a rough planning for my article, I have decided that my article is going to be how women get into the rock industry. It will be informal in 3rd person apart from quotes from the interviewee.

Comments
This will be based on an interview with the band but made into a featured article with quotes from the previous interview.

Purpose of your article
To entertain and inform my audience about the rising artist Katelynn Silverstone

Narrative voice
I will be using 3rd person in my article, with a few quotes what might make some parts 1st person

Style
My article will be Informal

Language Use
I may use colloquial language, ill try to avoid a dialect so the magazine will be suitable for all. I will probably use abbreviations, I may use pragmatics but I may decide not to. I may use field related jargon that is related to the music industry. I will probably use discourse markers like right, okay and so on there may be more things I use.

Recce of location

The Studio - Arts Centre, Darlington
Iam going to use the studio for my front cover image, main images on dps and maybe get images for my contents

Photo Shoot Plans

the camera will vary in shots and distance. I will move about the studio for the best angle for the photo. I am going to use both low key and high key lighten to see what pictures come out the best.

DAY/DATE; 26th Febuary 2010
COSTUME: leather jacket, skinnies (Black) and red boots
MAKE-UP: dark eyes
LOCATION: studio Arts Centre, Darlington
PHOTOGRAPHER; Kerry Louise More
EDITOR; Kerry Louise More

Here are my flat plans for my magazine. There still may be some changes to the magazine as production takes place.

Front Cover: I intend to call my magazine Sound of the Drums, I have decided to place the image in front slightly of the name of the magazine. I will use one master head and one tag line minumal as possible. So the focus is on the image. I have decided to a competition featuring winning something to do with an ipod as this is what my audience said they liked, an annoucement of the competition and free posters will be placed at left hand side small but clearly seen. The right hand side will feature the price of the magazine which will be £3.99 and the barcode.

Contents Page: I intend to use the contents page visually rather than text based. There will be 4 images on the lefthand side and the little text will be on the right, the text will feature the names of the pages and the page numbers. The images will link to some of the pages and will have the number in the right had side of the image in the top right hand side corner there will be the magazines logo this will feature on every page with in the magazine.

Double page spread: I intend this to be image based the main image will take up 3/4 of the page starting on the left hand side. the text will be on the right hand side with the magazine logo above it. Te bands name will be in the centre crossing over both pages. There may be some other images at the bottom on the left handside page this is not decided to after the flat plans where drawn this would make the pages more focused and advertise the band better by the visual imagery.

Initial sketches

Below there are some sketches I did for ideas these include logos and Names for the magazine. through this I have found the name of the magazine 'SOUND OF THE DRUMS' and the log as seen below top image.

Institutional Context

There are many different companies that produce magazine products, such as Buar Media which produces both Kerrang and Q magazine, and MoJo magazine which is a different style of music genre. There are also companies such as IPC Media which produces NME music magazine. The size of the magazine counts for alot in the magazine industry, if you have more money to produce the magazine then the better qualty the paper and cover will look (glossy hard ring binded). The less of a budget you have the more street wise the magazine will look A3 paper folded over and stapled together... Although with Q and Kerrang! been owned by the same company there is a difference, as Kerrang! is more my 'street wise' magazine with a glossy front cover but stapled together and Q is thicker paper specially the front cover but has a strong hard bind.
  1. Publishing Editior; There are many different editors I will be acting as them all this Editor will be taking place at the end of the project when it is finished to make sure everything looks good sounds good and is all in the right place. If the magazine needs to keep being edited could hinder the overal project.
  2. Journalist; I will be the journalist when I am perparing and making my article. I will be in charge of what the article says and get it ready to be edited if needed by the publishing editor. If I wait for the Images this could delay my article.
  3. Photographer; I will take all the images for the front cover, contents and spread... The images need to done prefably before the article is written. Time might hinder this getting my models into the right place on the write time.
  4. Media Researchers; I will be doing this before my photoshoot and the article is written. Media researchers find out the information and the bands to interview for the journalist and photographer.

Mood Board and Rationale

Mood Board
This is my mood board I have looked at many different fonts and styles. I have featured my intial colour scheme as that is what the audience research showed me.I have inclued in the mood board the type of poses and clothes my model/artist will be wearing I also showed the type of eye make up and props I want the model to use.

Proposal of ideas and Initial Treatment

Proposal
The magazine will be A4 size which is 20cmX30cm.
My intended audience is 16-19 year olds, this is seen in my research as the most popular age whom, buy music magazines. The audience will also like rock/indie music and the social class would be indie scensters/emos and grungers.
My intended purpose for the magazine is to entertain and to inform the audience of the lastest
news in the music world.
There are many different music magazines such as NME, KERRANG and Q magazine, my magazine would be on the lines of Kerrang as this was the most popular choice in both my questionnaires and focus group research.
I will be responable for the whole of the project, I personally will be organsing the photo shoot and taking the photos. I will be using others as models/artist and in my focus group both in my previously stated research and after the magazine is produced. I will be in charge of the scenery, props and costume I will have overal say in the postions and the models will be in for the photo shoot. I will be in charge of how my magazine will look and what it says.

initial treatment
My front cover will have a single person on the front as the main image no other images will be used on the front cover the name of the magazine will be behind the images head. There will be one main Heading what will suggest what the two page spread is about. The contents page will have at least 4 if not more images in, it will have text on the left handside, little text will be shown. The two page spread will have one main image which will cover one and 1/3 of the page. There will be some text, it will be an interview with the artist which is featured on the front cover the article will be about how women get into the Rock music industry and how successful they are with a perdomly male world 'Rock World'. There will be 3 other images on the two pages as well as the main image. Overal there may be 9 images in the magazine including the front cover the contents and the two page spread.

Target Audience - Primary Sources

Primary Research.
Questionnaire This is a copy of the questionnaire that i gave to 20 people, 10 girls and 10 boys all between my intial target audience 15-24 years. I asked them about genre of music, what magazines they buy, how much they would be willing to pay. Things about age and schooling and work.

Pie Charts - Questionaire results

These are some of the pie chart results. I also found out that people who I asked 60% of them have part time jobs and 10% work full time and the remaining 30% dont have a job. From that and the results above it is trongly indicating that my music magazine should be aimed to the 16-19 year olds whom are still at college, with part time jobs. The genre should be Rock and Indie. In the style of magazines such as Kerrang!. The price of the magazine should be in the brackets of £3.00-£3.99 as that is what the majority said they would pay. I also asked if they had some sort of music device with 85% of the people saying yes this could maybe help come up with some sort of compertition or advice about music devices

Focus Group
The video below is my focus group, I had to put it on youtube as i was having problems with blogspots upload video bit. So i put it on my youtube account.

My focus group also indicates that the genre should be rock and indie and that they like the style of Kerrang! magazine and the colours black and reds.

Overall I have found out what my target audience is and what the people want in a music magazine. This will help to get the magazine to become more spefic to the target audience.

Target Audience - Secondary Sources

EMO This taken from http://www.uktribes.com/ Emo section. It shows that this social group like to read alot of magazines and on the right hand side it shows some of the media they like to consume two magazines are there including Kerrang! and NME. earlier on in the article about Emo's it says that Emos like bands like Fall Out Boy

GrungersThis is also took from the site UKTribes this is shown that this different social group grungers do not really read magazines they perfer to read newspapers. They like things like Rock Sound and Reading/Leeds festivals (right hand side).
Indie Scensters This also took from UkTribes this is the social group indie Scensters these like magazines qiute a bit and like music like Erol Alkan, Klaxons, The Knife, TV On The Radio, Spank Rock, Vampire Weekend.

BlingersThis is also from the site UkTribes, this is the social group called Blingers this shows that the is social group arte big on reading magazines and like music. Earlier on in the website it states that the blingers like artists like Chris Brown, Jay-Z, Rhianna, Beyonce, Barack Obama, Russell Simmons.
This is NME own reader profile it tells us information about what the readers like and who reads the magazine.
It tells us that 31% of the readers are female and the remaining 69% are male readers. The profile tells us what the readers tend to use there money to buy things, like £46million spend there money on footwear.
The NME profile aslo tells us that the average age for their magazine is age 24 years. And that 29% of the readers are still students. 7% are working part time and 52% are working full time.

Kerrang Magazine tells us that the brand 'Kerrang' cover from Metallica to Muse, Foo Fighters to Fall Out Boy which covers a wide range of music. It also tells us that Kerrange has a radio station aswell as the magazine and music TV channel for fans of the brand.
Kerrang! describes their Audience Profile as 'Individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty.'
I have now found out through the secondary research alone what type of social groups read magazines. Although Blingers seem to read the most magazines, i think that Emo's/Grungers/Indie Scensters together have a bigger audience and share simularities in music which I can use in the magazine. The secondary research also showed that mainly males buy magazines, like NME and Kerrange and the age group is late teens and early teens. Therefore my colours will be black reds whites as the music genre is very simular to Kerrangs magazine and therefore colours can be simular. To get the genre across I would like to use some images with gutairs in. I will include a pictures on the contents of gig reviewers / of fans who write an article/ review for the magazine all though you will only see a mention of it in the contents page. My magazine will be a special issue of the magaine and the theme will be females in Rock world therefore will be female dominated.
